Orchestral administrations are guided by a weird mixture of stupidity, snobbism/racism, and ass kissing, and so far out of touch with their audiences it's pathetic. They are so hung up with preserving classical music as the privilege of the select few (white people with money, impenetrable foreign accents, etc), or the latest sexy/young/glamourous "sensation" that they don't realize that most people just don't care anymore. It's so true that they treat their own musicians as hired help, and waste the time of people who really want to help make a difference. I am a cellist who would rather heart a community orchestra perform than hear the Philly Orchestra, with their calcified repertoire and their dependence on young women in strapless dresses to "excite" the audience. What they call "community outreach" is condescending, and usually consists of sending Black or Hispanic people to talk about how wonderful classical music is, even though these same orchestras will not hire Black or Hispanic players unless they are "handpicked". It's all such a lie. As for auditions behind the much touted screen, that screen is for the protection of the orchestra committee, not the player.Elaine Macknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3495622859323058834.post-22864771221218737682009-10-17T21:21:19.891-04:002009-10-17T21:21:19.891-04:00I continually admire the honesty of your writing. ...I continually admire the honesty of your writing. Now...Susan, I so wish I could write the way you do. Now, I am having a total pregnancy giggle attack. You are so wise.

All kidding aside, the one part of being a musician that drives me insane is the fact that a lot of musicians and pro-companies are run totally on the amateur side. Actually, I have seen volunteers in amateur companies run things better than the big companies. Sigh...Monster Sopranohttp://monstersopranoweightlossjourney.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.com
